Fishermen Community Meeting for BP Oil Drilling Disaster

Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation and Mary Queen of Vietnam Church to host oil drilling disaster community meeting in Eastern New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – On Friday, May 7^th at 10:30am, the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation (MQVN CDC), in collaboration with the Mary Queen of Vietnam Church, will organize a community meeting to address the BP oil drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and its effects on the Vietnamese Community at 5069 Willowbrook Drive, New Orleans, LA 70129.

A large number of residents in the Vietnamese Communities are commercial fishermen, shrimpers, crew members, or watermen working in the fishing industry. Due to language access issues and insufficient representation, Vietnamese fishermen are currently not receiving accurate information on the recovery process. Hazardous materials and information safety training are not being provided in Vietnamese. With ongoing media coverage and rising community concern, it is imperative to inform Vietnamese fishermen and the community on the progress of the oil drilling disaster as well as methods for safer and proper clean-up.

To address the estimated 210,000 gallons of oil leaking into the Gulf daily, MQVN CDC and other community groups will discuss safe and equitable options for recovery and containment. “The needs of the Vietnamese community fishermen needs to be addressed,” says Tuan Nguyen, Deputy Director of MQVN CDC. The community meeting will address safety and economic concerns for Vietnamese residential fishermen, as well as provide crucial information and latest updates on the oil spill. Representatives from the offices of Congressman Joseph Cao, Senator David Vitter, Councilmembers-at-Large Arnie Fielkow and Jacquelyn Clarkson, United States Coast Guard, EPA Region VI, and other organizations will be present at the meeting.

NEW ORLEANS – Vào ngày thứ sáu, tháng 5, ngày 7 vào 10:30 sáng,  Cơ Quang Phát Triển Cộng Đồng (MQVN CDC), họp tác với Giáo Xứ Maria Nữ Vương Việt Nam sẽ tổ chức cuộc họp trong cộng đồng với mục đích là giải quyết vấn đề tai hoạ dầu xăng BP bị đổ ở nước Gulf của Mễ Tây Cơ và sự ảnh hưởng cũa nó đến cồng đồng người việt ở tại 5069 Willowbrook Drive, New Orleans, LA 70129.

Một số dân chúng ở tại những cộng đồng người Việt làm nghề đánh cá, bắt tom, và làm trong nghề đi biển. Vì sự bất tiện liên quang đến sinh ngữ và không đủ sự tiêu biểu, những người Việt đánh cá không nhận được tài liệu trính thức về thu dọn dầu xăng. Chương trình huấn luyện về kèm chế chất độc và tài liệu an toàn hiện tại không được cung cắp hẳng hòi bằng sinh ngữ tiếng Việt. Với những lời nguy ngập của tập báo chí và sự lo âu của cộng đồng, chúng tôi cảm thấy sự báo tin cho dân đắng cá về chi tiết dầu đổ và phương pháp an toàn ngân chận dầu rất quan trọng và cần thiết. 

Ðể đáp lời nhu cầu đối phó với khoảng 210,000 galông dâu đang hiện tại rò ra nước Gulf của Mễ Tây Cơ, Cơ Quan Phát Triển Cộng Ðồng đang hợp tác với Cơ Quan Bảo Vệ Môi Sinh Hoa Ky, Sierra Club, SeaGrant, Greater New Orleans Foundation, Luật Sư Waltzers Associates, và những nhóm cộng đồng để bàn về phương pháp an toàn và công bằng để ngăn chặn dầu xăng chính sách. “Những nhu cầu của cộng đồng người Việt rất cần thiết được đáp ứng,” anh Tuấn Nguyễn, Phó Giám Ðốc của Cơ Quan Phát Triển đã nói. Cuộc họp nầy sẽ giải quyết về sự an toàn và kinh tế cho người dân Viet Nam ở tại xứ Mỷ và làm nghề đánh cá, cũng như là đưa ra những tài liệu quan trọng và tin tức mới nhất về tai hoạ dâu xăng BP bị đổ. Nghị viên từ văn phòng Cao Quang Anh, David Vitter, ông Arnie Fielkow, và Lính Thuần Phòng Bờ Biển sẽ có mặt tại buổi họp này.
